TPLF/EPRDF has judiciary under its thumb

Jan 24, 2009

TPLF regime not only abused the judiciary but it possessed it as a part of its own party structure.

All of the young judges recently appointed are graduates of the State civil service training college.

The recent appointment of 24 judges, all more or less sympathisers of the TPLF/EPRDF (governing coalition) raises important questions about how independent the judiciary is from political power. From this point of view, the profile of the new president of the Federal Supreme Court, Tegene Getaneh, is not at all reassuring. He is a graduate of Essex University (United Kingdom) and of AddisAbaba Law Faculty and has been a federal judge for 16 years. On the other hand, the last four years he has been the president of the military court of appeal. For his part, Woubishet Shiferaw was appointed president of the federal high court and Solomon Areda has been designated vice president of the Federal Court of First Instance. These three judges were chosen and their names put to Parliament for approval on 20 January by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. They are considered loyal supporters of the TPLF/EPRDF.
